2009 Typhoon Morakot Update

The following is a letter sent to the ACUCA Secretariat this month from St. John's University in Taiwan.

Dear friends,

On behalf of St. John’s University, Taipei, may I express to you my sincere thanks and gratitude for your concern and prayers for the tragic situation in southern Taiwan as a result of Typhoon Morakot last week.

As the disaster unfolds, it is clear that many lives have been lost, homes and buildings buried, crops and livelihoods destroyed. Unfortunately one of our students lost his life when his car was swept away from a broken bridge into the flooded torrents of the river. We have more than 70 students from the affected areas, including around 10 students whose homes have been damaged and whose families need help.

This past weekend, a group of students from the university student Christian group have gone with the chaplaincy assistants and counselors to Chia-Yi County Government to assist the Red Cross with the relief work. Much of this work involves unpacking boxes of donated items, sorting them into clothes, food, water, medicines etc, arranging the storage; followed by packing up the trucks ready for dispatch to the mountain areas. Our students went together with a group from the local Episcopal churches, and yesterday afternoon they were personally visited by the Bishop of Taiwan, the Rt. Rev. David J. H .Lai, who encouraged and prayed for them.

This coming week we are sending a group of about 20 students to Taitung on the east coast to help clean an elementary school ready for the start of the new academic year on September 1. Many schools, as well as homes, have been inundated with mud, and need to be cleared. We hope that much of the relief work can be accomplished very quickly as this is the typhoon season, and more typhoons are expected.

In the USA, ‘Episcopal Relief and Development’ has set up a Disaster Response Fund to provide help. Here in Taiwan we are doing our own fund-raising to help our students who have been affected. If you would like to contribute, then all donations will be most welcome.

Thank you again for your continued concern and support at this time.

Yours sincerely,

Jean-lien Chen

President, St. John’s University

Next Round of the Student Mobility Scheme

The ACUCA secretariat is currently accepting applications for the next round of the   Student Mobility Scheme (SMS). For those who are unaware of the program, it was set up to foster understanding between students at ACUCA institutions, while at the same time  making use of the diverse ACUCA network.

The SMS provides for a one semester, tuition free stay at a participation institution. Students are given administrative, as well as financial support with their exchange. The secretariat acts as a conduit between the applicant and their chosen institutions. Students are usually placed in either their fist or second, out of an initial choice of three universities. A travel grant is also given to a maximum of $750.

We urge the international offices at each of the 31 member institutions to promote this worthwhile program to their student body. We also welcome applications to join the SMS from any ACUCA institution.

Changes to the Student Mobility Scheme

With the increase in ACUCA Student Mobility Scheme (SMS) participating members, we have found it necessary to make the SMS procedure simple and convenient to enable promotion of the program. The Secretariat will no longer coordinate the collection of applications and assign the students to the various hosting institutions. From January 2010, the Secretariat’s primary function will be to act as a regulator and distributor of the travel subsidy. The role of Secretariat for the SMS will now be:

Ÿ Promoting the SMS

Ÿ Helping new member institutions to join

Ÿ Maintaining a record of all applications

Ÿ Updating the semester deadlines and requirements on behalf of each  participating institution on the ACUCA website

Ÿ Arranging travel subsidies

SMS Application Procedure

1. Each participating institution must provide the necessary information for the student mobility program (deadlines and requirements) to the ACUCA Secretariat. The Secretariat will collect and distribute the information through this website.

2. Each institution should themselves apply directly to ACUCA SMS participating institutions and maintain communication with them to enable successful assignment of applying students between the respective exchanging institutions.

3. There are TWO parts to the application:

Ÿ For admission, the application materials required by the host institution should be sent directly to the institution in advance of the deadline.

Ÿ For the ACUCA travel subsidy, an ACUCA nomination form (downloadable from this website) should be sent to the ACUCA Secretariat when the institutional application form is submitted. Upon acceptance, the applying institution should send the ACUCA travel subsidy form (downloadable from this website), a copy of the acceptance letter, and a copy of the flight tickets to the Secretariat by the following dates:

ACUCA Biennial Conference & 18th General Assembly (November 1-3, 2010)

The ACUCA Biennial Conference and 18th General Assembly took place at Keimyung University, Daegu, Korea, from November 1-3, 2010. The theme for this year’s conference was “Sustainable Development and Christian Initiative.” With this Conference we would like to have taken the opportunity to address some of the critical environmental issues, which our region is facing. We were mindful of the need to strike a balance between a theological and scientific focus. It was our wish to explore the various ways in which we can utilize our ACUCA institutions’ core Christian principles, as well as our extensive and growing ACUCA network. The Conference was an opportunity to share best practices on environmentally-friendly campus development, to initiate international and inter-institutional cooperation, and to re-affirm our commitment to the service of the Christian message in Asia.

We had identified the following as our Conference objectives:

. To identify the connections between the Christian ethic and environmental action, in the light of the dangers and risks faced by the environment in Asia.

· To raise awareness of the environmental dangers that unfettered development poses to Asia, and to identify the role that Christian institutions of higher education can play in developing a sustainable society.

· To share ideas on the successful implementation of policies and curriculum to educate students and to develop an environmentally-friendly campus.

· To explore the possibility of developing a framework for collaborative environmental programs, utilizing ACUCA’s potential for student and faculty exchange.

East Japan Earthquake

To ACUCA Members
Re: East Japan Earthquake

The March 11, 2011 East Japan Earthquake devastated East Japan, especially the Tohoku region. ACUCA member Tohoku Gakuin University, which is located near the epicenter in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, incurred substantial damage. Despite immense difficulties, faculty, staff and students of the university are now engaging in an all-out restoration effort.
On behalf of the ACUCA members in Japan, I would like to express my deepest appreciation for your warm messages of sympathy after the earthquake. In response to a call for donations, five Japanese ACUCA member universities including ICU (International Christian University) have agreed to make contributions to support Tohoku Gakuin University. In the event that we ask for donations from the international community, we would be most grateful for your support.
My prayers and thoughts are with all who perished in this disaster and their families. May God bless all those suffering from this calamity.

Support to Thai Member Institutions

ACUCA Executive Committee members have decided to make a donation to each of ACUCA’s Thai member institutions in order to provide support in the face of the flooding the region is currently experiencing. The donations are in the amount of US$5,000 to each of the four Thai member institutions (Payap University, Assumption University, Christian University of Thailand and Asia-Pacific International University)(US$20,000 total).

The member institutions in Thailand contacted us to let us know how they are faring with regard to the flooding in the region. Although they have not directly experienced damage from this disaster, an end to the flooding is not yet in sight and the Executive Committee decided to make the donation in light of the relief activities each school is starting at this time.

We believe there are many ACUCA colleges and universities already providing relief in various forms to Thailand but we hope all ACUCA member institutions will continue to offer their support to the Thai people and ACUCA’s member institutions in Thailand.

2014 ACUCA Student Camp

The 2013 ACUCA Management Conference held at Fu Jen Catholic University from November 1-3, 2013 has been successfully held.

"Values Education: Re-discovering our Values to build a better You and build a better World." (11-15 August 2014, Fu Jen Catholic University, Taipei, Taiwan)

ACUCA successfully completed its Student Camp held at Fu Jen Catholic University from 11-15 of August 2014.

Participants comprised of 101 students from 8 countries (Japan, Korea, Hongkong, Taiwan, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and India). 71 came from different universities. 30 student volunteers from the host university were at the same time participants. The largest delegation were from Japan (18 students), Taiwan (17) and Indonesia (16).

The theme for this year's camp was "Values Education: Re-discovering our Values to build a better you and build a better World." The students came together to review their own personal values, the values of their culture and the values of their faith; reflect on the how they live their values as students in a rapid changing world and to rediscover that living out the good values in one's life will contribute to build a better world.

A special feature of the camp was the invitation for participants to write an article about the theme. On the third day, during a workshop on re-examining values in fast changing society, a dynamic approach was used by the student volunteers to enable the participants to have a voice and make a choice. Based on the feedback and reflection of the delegates, they found the activity thought provoking and challenging. They also remembered the impact of the sharing circle on the second day when they were asked to "empty themselves" of their cellphones, which they value most.
